Schools closed in Bhadrak

The flood situation in Odisha continues to be grim with thousands of people being affected. The government however is taking all possible steps to reduce the damage and has evacuated thousands of people. As a precautionary measure, schools and anganwadi centers have been closed in three of the most affected districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur and Nabrangpur.

The official notice of school closure in Bhadrak on Thursday read as follows, “Pursuant to intending Flood situation in Baitarani and Brahmani river system, adverse weather condition and keeping in view safety of School students, classes are hereby declared to be suspended in all Govt./Govt. Aided/Private Schools including O.A.Vs and Higher Secondary Schools in the district on 30.07.2026 (Thursday).”

The CM took to his X handle and wrote about the flood situation in Odisha and assured people that the government is taking all possible measures. He wrote in Odia and it roughly translates as, “The life and safety of every citizen of the state is of utmost importance to us. I and my government are closely monitoring the situation arising out of the incessant rains and the flood situation in some rivers. I have discussed the flood situation and its management with the Chief Secretary and the Special Relief Commissioner. I have directed the entire administration to ensure the safety of the people in the affected areas.”

He further added, “I request you, do not panic or get panicked at all; we are with you at every step. Follow the instructions of the administration and stay safe.”

He informed that, “Three senior IAS officers have been given special responsibility to personally supervise the flood management, evacuation and relief work in Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts. SRC offices and State Emergency Control Rooms have been directed to be kept open 24×7 to monitor the water level and the situation. NDRF, ODRAF, Fire and Police forces are fully prepared to evacuate people from the low-lying areas to safer places.”

Speaking on the facilities he said, “All shelters are being provided with clean drinking water, cooking food, emergency healthcare, snakebite preventive medicine and sufficient fodder for domestic animals. The police have intensified night patrolling to ensure the safety of the homes and property of citizens coming to the shelters.”

In conclusion he added, “Directions have been issued to provide immediate compensation to the affected people for the homes and farmlands damaged by the floods.”

The flood in Odisha has now become a matter of concern for the government as over two lakh people across six districts have already been affected. According to the Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha, “more than two lakh three thousand people in 748 villages have been affected, as many as 28 thousand residents have been evacuated.” Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari informed as many as three deaths including that of a fire service personnel have been reported due to flood situation in Odisha.
