With the coming of BJP into power, West Bengal sets strict rules for Durga Puja 2026. The rules shall be strictly imposed and violations shall draw fines. Preservation of tradition and culture is said to be the main reason behind imposition of these rules.
The newly appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari announced these guidelines at a meeting in Kolkata. The rules included restrictions on opening of the pandals to drinking of liquor.
The government has restricted pandal openings to the auspicious period after Mahalaya,the pandals shall not be allowed to open earlier. DJ music in pandals and processions has been banned completely.
Further, a dry day has been declared to be observed on Maha Ashtami that is October 19. This is the day when pushpanjali is given to Maa Durga. Immersion rules were also made stricter.
It has been specified that the Puja must follow traditional dates and end by October 24. There shall strictly be no offensive themes. The Government of West Bengal added that smaller committees get optional grant of Rs. 1 lakh, free electricity, and simplified permissions.
The government has reportedly skipped the Red Road carnival this year. However, ther are plans of a mega Mahalaya event at Eden Gardens. It is likely that PM Modi will attend it. Further detailed reports awaited with regards to West Bengal sets strict rules for Durga Puja 2026.
