dumas beach

Dumas beach! Did you know this place was initially a cremation and burial ground and is famous as the ‘Haunted Beach of Gujarat.’

Situated on the western coast of India, along the Arabian sea, located approximately 21 kms of the city of Surat in Gujarat, lies a beautiful seashore called the Dumas beach.

The uniqueness of this beach is its black coloured sand creating a picturesque contrast with the greenish blue waters of the Arabian sea. Pictures clicked here make them a clear win on Instagram. This beach has won a reputation worldwide for yet another reason.

Local legends, which are very popular, relate tales about ghostly paranormal activities around this beach. There is a certain truth behind these stories because the beach was, once upon a time, used as a cremation ground of the Hindus and also adjacent to it lies a burial ground for children.

During the day time, this beach is always bustling with crowds of visitors and activities of different kinds where vendors are seen selling their wares, children playing on the sandy shores and families spending a peaceful time together.

But as the evening draws near, the entire scenario changes to one of utter solitude and an eerie silence pervades the place.

The Scary Past Of The Dumas beach

Local people claim that the beach is haunted by the dissatisfied and restless spirits of those who may have had untimely, unnatural deaths especially little children. According to folklores these spirits never left this place.

Weird sounds can be heard in the quiet darkness like footsteps, children crying and laughing. White ghostly figures have been seen gliding along the black sandy shores with flashes of light from apparently no where. People steer clear of this beach after sunset. But those dare devils who wish to challenge the local stories have either gone missing or a few lucky ones have some unforgettable harrowing experiences to narrate.

There is also a belief that the black color of the sand is such for a reason. The ashes of those cremated here and the mortal remains of those buried here has got mixed with the sand to make it appear black.

This makes the place even more frightening. Some dead bodies found here are seen with their tongues protruding out like they have been strangulated to death. The paranormal incidents though thrilling and interesting are still considered to be simply creations of superstitions minds.

According to the rational minded people who try to provide a logical answer to the black coloured soil on Dumas beach may have got its color from iron contents found in the Arabian sea. The eerie sounds could have been caused by the topography, coastal breeze and the landscape.

In spite of opposing opinions by science on one hand and folklore on the other, the Dumas beach in Gujarat continues to be a tourist attraction because of the thrill and intrigue associated with it. But the beach is closed sharp at 8 pm even today!
