Scrub typhus in Odisha reported from Angul district. According to reliable reports, one person has died. The death has reportedly taken place in Pavitrapur Panchayat in Pallahara town of Angul district in Odisha.
According to reports, other than one death more than 10 people have been infected with Scrub Typhus in the district. The infection happens due to the bite of an infected chigger insect.
Scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a disease caused by bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. Symptoms of scrub typhus include fever, chills, headache, body aches, a scab-like region at the chigger bite site (eschar), mental changes, enlarged lymph nodes, and rash.
No vaccine is available to prevent scrub typhus. Reduce your risk of getting scrub typhus by avoiding contact with infected chiggers. When traveling to areas where scrub typhus is common, avoid areas with lots of vegetation and brush where chiggers may be found.
Scrub typhus should be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. Doxycycline can be used in persons of any age. Antibiotics are most effective if given soon after symptoms begin.
