RC cancellation in Odisha is likely for over 20 lakh vehicles, the State Transport Authority (STA) has warned people in this regard.
According to reports, 20 lakh vehicles in the state were sent to the ‘permanent archive’, which means that their registration certificates or RCs have been cancelled. In addition, about 30 lakh vehicles have been kept in the ‘temporary archive’. If the necessary documents are not renewed, these vehicles will face problems in the future.
New Rules On RC cancellation In Odisha To Be Applied
According to the new vehicle classification system of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the status of vehicles is being checked based on the data in the VAHAN database. Vehicles are being kept in different categories based on the expiry and renewal status of the necessary documents including RC. Vehicles whose necessary documents have not been renewed for a long period will be the most affected.
Earlier Action By Commissionerate Police
A few months ago, the Commissionerate Police had told the STA to take action against violators in a letter. The letter said, it has been observed that a significant number of vehicle owners are habitually violating traffic rules and failing to pay the fines imposed for such violations.
In the first phase, such violators have been identified, and a formal request was sent by the Commissionerate Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack to the State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, Cuttack for the cancellation of Registration Certificates (RCS) and Fitness Certificates of the concerned vehicles.
In this regard, the State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, Cuttack, has issued instructions to all Regional Transport Officers (RTOS). To blacklist such vehicles and initiate action for cancellation of Registration Certificates (RCs) and Fitness Certificates, particularly in cases involving repeated traffic violations.
Future Steps On RC cancellation In Odisha
It has also been reported that about 65 lakh vehicles do not have valid insurance. It is worth mentioning here that, it is illegal to drive a vehicle with a cancelled RC on public roads.
Therefore, the State transport department has advised vehicle owners to immediately check whether the RC status of their vehicle, insurance, PUC and other necessary documents are valid.
