The Silver City of Cuttack and its Magnificent Celebration of Maa Durga
The Durga Puja of Cuttack is famous as the entire city wears a bridal look. Almost every nook and corner has a festive fervor. People from various parts of the country come to have a glimpse of the Goddesses in their finery.
The Silver city is famous for its silver ‘Tarakasi’ or Filigree work which is showcased in the most perfect way as the ‘Medha’ or decoration in the pandals. Maa Durga is adorned with real gold and silver jewellery in most of the major puja mandaps and this is also a major crowd puller.
Another important aspect of the Dusheera of Cuttack is the religious unity that it brings. Hindus and Muslims work hand in hand to make the festivities a grand affair.
In fact, the medhas or the backdrops are mostly designed by Muslim artisians. The zari medhas are crafted completely by Muslim craftsmen. This has been the tradition of most of the puja committees since time immemorial. Thus truly making the city stand by its stance of ‘bhaichara ra sahara’ or the city of brotherhood and bonding.
The festivities begin from Mahalaya that is on October 10, this day marks the arrival of the goddess. Rest the important days of Durga Puja are from October 16 to October 21, 2026 that is from Shashthi to Dashami.
