In a major update, three of the rescued orangutans in Odisha are suffering from anemia. Their treatment has begun. A special technical expert committee conducted a thorough health check-up of the wild animal cubs yesterday.
Preliminary blood test reports revealed that three out of the five cubs are suffering from anemia. One of them is suffering from severe anemia while the other two have mild anemia symptoms. More details about their health status will be available after the other test reports are available.
It is worth mentioning here that on September 13, a major step had been taken for the care of the five rescued Orangutans in Odisha. A five-member technical committee had been constituted to oversee their health, nutrition, and general upkeep.
This committee will review all aspects related to the care of the orangutans housed at the HRC or Hand Rearing Center in Nandankanan. Experts will provide recommendations regarding their diet, healthcare, and the environment in which they should be kept.
The Director of Nandankanan Biological Park will serve as the Member-Convener of the committee. The committee includes a veterinarian from the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysore, a representative from the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, and the Project Coordinator of the Centre for Wildlife Health at OUAT, Bhubaneswar.
If necessary, the committee may also seek assistance from other experts or organizations, both within the country and abroad.
The Chief Wildlife Warden and PCCF (Wildlife), stated that Orangutans are not native to India. Therefore, the government’s primary objective is care of rescued Orangutans. The best possible care at the hand-rearing center in Nandankanan, is being provided to them. The health of the five infant orangutans is being monitored round-the-clock.
Doctors and three caretakers have been deployed for this purpose. According to the Head of the OUAT Wildlife Treatment Center, the infant orangutans are gradually becoming familiar with their caretakers. They are also readily accepting food from the caretakers. One of the five infants has recovered from a fever. The other two have reportedly recovered from their cold.
