Wet Durga Puja in Odisha

Wet Durga Puja in Odisha likely this year as the MeT Department has predicted low pressure related rains. Rain may hinder the worship and darshan in Odisha during Durga Puja. The enthusiasm of Durga Puja is likely to be a  rain-soaked one, says the latest weather bulletin.

According to the MeT, a wet Durga Puja in Odisha this year is likely as a low pressure may be formed ahead of the Pujas. The low pressure may lead to heavy to very heavy rain.

According to the IMD’s extended-range outlook, an upper-air cyclonic circulation may form in the North Andaman Sea by October 12. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form in the Andaman Sea by the next day that is by October 13. This system may later move towards the Bay of Bengal. There is a low possibility of it taking the form of a depression in the central part of the South Bay of Bengal and the adjacent central Bay of Bengal by October 15.

The IMD has currently placed the possibility of this cyclogenesis in the ‘low probability’ category of 1 to 33 percent. Meanwhile, since Durga Puja begins from the October 16, the possible system is being monitored. If the system strengthens in the Bay of Bengal and approaches the Odisha coast, the amount of rainfall in the state may increase during Puja.

Wet Durga Puja in Odisha Likely

However, this does not mean that there will be heavy rainfall in Puja from now on. Since there are still a few days left for the system to form, it is not clear which direction the low pressure will move, how strong it will be and what its actual impact on Odisha will be.

Even in various weather models, there is no consensus on the further intensity of the system. Although there is no sign of heavy rainfall in the recent days, light to moderate rainfall may occur at some places.

IMD has also issued a warning of thunderstorms and thunderstorms in Odisha for October 6 and 7. So now there is concern on the weather change in the Bay of Bengal between October 12 and 15. Whether the weather in Odisha will remain dry or drenched in rain by the time Durga Puja begins will be known only after the path of the possible low pressure becomes clear.
