heatwave in Puri

The heat in Puri has broken a record of 130 years. Severe heatwave in Puri has been recorded. The holy city has not been this hot since more than a century.

The ‘real feel’ has been recorded at 49 degrees Celsius. This is the second highest daily temperature ever recorded for the month of October in the 130-years of weather record.

According to the weather data available since 1896, the highest temperature in Puri city was 36.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, i.e. on October 5.

This is the second highest daily temperature recorded in Puri so far in October. It is worth noting that earlier, a temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Puri on October 4, 2024. Now the temperature of 36.6 degrees on October 5, 2026 has surpassed that record.

Even though October has already begun, Puri is experiencing intense heat during the day time. Back in 2023, there was intense heat during the El-Nino effect. Currently, with the effect of El-Nino, the environment is expected to heat up further.

Due to the heatwave in Puri, the streets looked deserted. The tourists who are generally seen walking around in the streets and bathing in the sea shore refrained from doing so. They preferred to stay indoors. The locals said that they had never felt this kind severe heat during the month of October.

Weather Likely To Change Soon

However, the weather is likely to change soon. According to the MeT, a wet Durga Puja in Odisha this year is likely as a low pressure may be formed ahead of the Pujas. The low pressure may lead to heavy to very heavy rain.

According to the IMD’s extended-range outlook, an upper-air cyclonic circulation may form in the North Andaman Sea by October 12. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form in the Andaman Sea by the next day that is by October 13.

This system may later move towards the Bay of Bengal. There is a low possibility of it taking the form of a depression in the central part of the South Bay of Bengal and the adjacent central Bay of Bengal by October 15.

The IMD has currently placed the possibility of this cyclogenesis in the ‘low probability’ category of 1 to 33 percent. Meanwhile, since Durga Puja begins from the October 16, the possible system is being monitored. If the system strengthens in the Bay of Bengal and approaches the Odisha coast, the amount of rainfall in the state may increase during Puja.
