The spire (chuda/shikhara) of the temple was spotted on the beach by a passerby. Curiosity then led him to dig a little near what then seemed like a round stone. The temple belongs to a deity called Gangadevi said the locals. They also said that their land, entire village and their goddess have been eaten away by the sea. The temple that has been discovered in the seashore in Ganjam was washed away by the sea decades ago.
In another similar incident, the famous temple of Goddess Maa Panchubarahi has been taken away by the sea. The sea breached the coast at Satabhaya of Kendrapara district in Odisha and took away the last standing structure of the village. It is almost as if the sea never keeps anything with it. While it took away one temple, it has given back another.
