Hirakud dam has opened seven gates. Earlier, flood water was being discharged through two gates. Due to the increase in water level, five more gates of Hirakud have been opened.
Currently, the water level of Hirakud reservoir is 618.77 feet. More gates have been opened due to heavy rain in the upper catchment area. Currently, flood water is being discharged through seven gates. Out of which, water is being discharged through five gates on the left side and two gates on the right side.
An average of 2 lakh 9 thousand 16 cusecs of water is entering the reservoir every second, while 66 thousand cusecs of water is being discharged. Since more water is being discharged from Hirakud, it may also affect the Mahanadi basin.
Therefore, people in the riverside areas have been advised to be alert and follow the instructions of the administration. Regular monitoring is being kept on the water level and gate opening status of Hirakud reservoir.
