Indravati Dam opens gates after 7 long years. Heavy rains expected in Odisha in the coming days due to low pressure. Keeping in view the possible rains, the gates of the Indravati reservoir have been opened after 7 years.
Out of the total 7 gates, gate number 6 is being opened by 0.5 meters and water is being discharged. The administration has warned the people of the lower areas.
The maximum water storage capacity of the Indravati dam is 642 meters, while the water level was 640.29 meters when the gates were opened. Currently, 177.53 cusecs of water is entering the reservoir per second, while 203.28 cusecs of water was being discharged before the gates were opened. Now a total of 275.28 cusecs of water is being discharged.
It has been informed that the gates will be closed when the water level reaches 639.60 meters. It will be decided whether to open more gates or close them after observing the rainfall situation in the coming days. The gates of the reservoir were last opened in 2019.
Heavy Rain In Odisha Predicted
It is worth mentioning here that, low pressure may take the form of a depression today causing heavy rainfall in Odisha. It is likely to reach the South Odisha-North Andhra coast on September 23.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the low pressure area active in the Bay of Bengal may intensify further today and take the form of a depression. The track and intensity of this weather system are being monitored continuously.
The low pressure formed over the North Andaman Sea and adjacent east-central Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards.
Due to favourable weather conditions, it is likely to develop into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal today. After the depression formation, it may gather more strength in the sea.
