Kolkata: In a fire in Kolkata as many as nine people have died and several others have been injured. The fire occurred in a hotel on the wee hours of Wednesday at around 2 am.

According to reports, the fire in Kolkata happened in a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street. The fire spread so rapidly that as many as nine people were charred to death. Several others were trapped and have been injured.

Reports further add that, the deceased were Bangladeshi citizens who arrived in Kolkata for medical treatment. The Fire department has confirmed the number of deaths as nine and that the deceased were from Bangladesh.

From preliminary reports it is being guessed that there was an air conditioner (AC) blast in one of the rooms. However, the exact reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained. The fire department is present at the spot, the cooling operations are underway.

An investigation has been initiated by the police into the matter. This is a developing story, further detailed reports awaited in this matter.
