Janmashtami is a popular Hindu festival which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Families make arrangements for traditional midnight celebrations. Decorating the house can make the event seem festive.
It is not necessary to have a budget or to hire professional decorators for a beautiful Janmashtami display. By using flowers, fabric, clay pots, lights, and a little creativity, household items can become festive decorations. The following are some DIY Janmashtami decoration ideas to help you get your home ready for Krishna’s arrival.
Create a Krishna jhula. For the base of a decorated jhula for Janmashtami decoration, you can use a swing, a box, or a handmade cardboard frame. Cover the swing with fabric. Adorn the edges with flowers, beads, and ribbons. Place a Krishna idol on the swing.
Flower-Petal Rangoli. Make a rangoli using flower petals using marigolds, roses and jasmines. Put a diya in the middle to give light, and it will look beautiful.
Reuse household items. You do not have to buy items to decorate for Janmashtami. Old dupattas can become backdrops. Glass jars can serve as flower vases. Cardboard can turn into arches. Leftover gift ribbons can decorate the matkis. The aim is to create an atmosphere, not a perfectly arranged display.
Use Fairy lights. This creates an absolute different atmosphere of your Janmashtami celebration. Arrange diyas around the rangoli, the puja thali and the background. Turn matkis into decor. The earthen pots called matkis are closely linked with stories of Krishna’s childhood so they are decorations, for Janmashtami. Paint the clay pots bright and add dots, floral designs or traditional patterns. Put flowers inside the pots. Hang them in the puja area.
