In a major development, government of India mandates caller names on 4G calls from November 1, 2026. Government directs telecom operators to mandatorily display callers’ registered names on incoming calls from November 1, said reports on Thursday.
The Department of Telecommunications has directed telecom operators to show callers’ registered names on incoming calls without fail. So no more calls from, ‘unknown caller’. Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Jio, and BSNL to mandatorily display callers’ KYC-registered names on incoming calls.
The official letter to the telecom operators read, “Trials have been carried out by telecommunication service providers for introduction of calling name presentation service in wireless terrestrial networks established using 4G and higher generation technologies (hereinafter referred to as “telecommunication networks”).”
The notice further added , “All telecommunication service providers who hold authorisation or license to provide access services (hereinafter referred to as “TSPS”) are hereby instructed to introduce calling name presentation service in their telecommunication networks across all service areas with effect from 1.11.2026.”
However, introduction of calling name presentation service in wireless terrestrial networks established using 2G and 3G technologies and in public switched telephone networks shall be considered separately, after examination of the matter.
The originating TSP” means a TSP in whose telecommunication network the call is being originated by the user terminal of the calling user. The terminating TSP” means a TSP in whose telecommunication network the call is being terminated at the user terminal of the called user.
Many users say this step of India mandates caller names on 4G calls marks the end of Truecaller app in the country. Since the cellular network will now directly do what the app does.
