China tightens travel rules for its citizens. The government can now restrict its citizens from travelling abroad. As the new exit-and-entry rules take form various curbs have been issued on travel.
The rules can bar citizens deemed a potential threat to national technology security from leaving the country. Citizens deemed to have been a threat to China’s national security or interests while overseas can also be barred from leaving the country for up to three years after they return.
China has recently intensified its exit controls and introduced a strict liability system where approving officials face personal accountability. The restrictions have expanded beyond civil servants and state owned enterprise employees to include teachers, doctors, executives, and even university students.
However, Chinese authorities say that the measures are intended to safeguard national sovereignty. They added that these curbs do not target ordinary citizens.
On the other hand it is worth mentioning here that, The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for China. The Government is warning that Americans could be detained over private messages or prevented from leaving the country without advance notice. The advisory urges visitors to keep a low profile.
